The Montagu Cup was first competed for in the 1896-97 season with the final taking place in Mexborough.
To this day, the Montagu Cup final, is still held in Mexborough. Traditionally this match is played on Easter Monday at 11am, at the Hampden Road ground.
It is thought to be the oldest football competition still played at its original venue. The 1897 final was also played on Easter Monday.
